What has a small german village Alsberg, to do with USA; specially Brookville/Indiana?
Alsberg is a part of the town 63628 Bad Soden-Salmuenster/Hesse, 70 kms, northeast from Francfort/M. In 1848, Johann Adam Harnischfeger from Alsberg, emigrated together with his wife, Anna Maria Kleinfelder and one child, to USA, to Oak Forest in Indiana, near Brookville.
One of his grand-grandchildren, Joanne Harnischfeger-Sottong found the small village Alsberg, after some adventure, at the end of 1980th, and visited her new friends and presumed relatives in the village in several times, during the last 25 years, lately in 2013, on the 700-year-festivities of the village.
The main reason for the visit was as well the publishing of the book “Saltsmugglers of Alsberg” in 2012 in german, a novel written by a teacher of Alsberg, Josef Paul.
In this small book are mentioned the first two letters of the emigrant, Johann Adam Harnischfeger to his families and friends in Alsberg. In the novel, his family in Alsberg received the first letter, after one year incertity, what had happened with the emigrants.
After her visit in July 2013, Joanne HS wrote an article in Whitewater Publications Brookville, about all the story, which has got a greate resonance in USA, as well as in the local region Spessart around Alsberg, what still remains in both parts. In consecuence of the interest in the story, following to the articles appeared in local press in Germany as in Brookville, there has appeared now a fotodocumentation, with textprobe of the book “Saltsmugglers of Alsberg”, in version german/english.
The fotodocumentation is published, on the homepage of town Bad Soden-Salmuenster, Stadtteil Alsberg.and may be print, or stored for reading it...
Finally, the book Salzschwärzer von Alsberg/The Saltsmugglers of Alsberg Josef Paul has been translated into English by a facebook friend of B. Steitz, Martina Bedregal Calderon for free (gringa2pe(at)yahoo.co.uk). Greatefully, translated gratis for the publisher Richard Pfahls, a nephew of the authors wife.
